history
The KORSO was founded in November 2008 as an amalgamation of secular associations in Germany. It emerged from an informal selection committee that had been set up in 2000 by the cultural scientist Horst Groschopp . The founding president was Frieder Otto Wolf , his deputy Carsten Frerk .
Founding members were:
- Nationwide associations:
- German Freethinkers Association (DFV)
- Umbrella organization of free ideological communities (DFW)
- Humanistic Association of Germany (HVD)
- International Federation of Non-Denominational and Atheists (IBKA)
- Youth Consecration Germany (JwD)
- National academies and foundations
- Giordano Bruno Foundation (gbs)
- Humanistic Academy Germany (HAD)
- Freedom of the Mind Foundation (Hamburg)
- Unitates Foundation
- Regional organizations and foundations
- Humanism Foundation Berlin
- Red Tree (Dresden)
The Humanist Academy Germany and the Humanism Foundation Berlin left the KORSO shortly after it was founded, the Unitates Foundation at the end of 2017.
From December 2012 to March 2019 the physicist Helmut Fink headed the KORSO. At strategy meetings in Kassel (May 2014), Klingberg (June 2016), representatives of the member associations agreed on common topics and positions and on how the KORSO could work in public within the scope of its possibilities and available resources.
At the beginning of 2017, the KORSO published a brochure about its goals, its demands and its member associations. On January 13, 2017, the chairman Helmut Fink and his deputy Helmut Kramer presented the work of the KORSO in a press conference in the Bundespressehaus Berlin.
In the council meeting at the beginning of March 2017, the Federation for Freedom of the Mind bfg Bayern was accepted as a new member of the KORSO. Following the 2017 council meeting, chairman Helmut Fink outlined the current status of the KORSO and his plans in an interview with the hpd. The UNITATES Foundation will leave the KORSO at the end of 2017.
At the end of March 2019, the perception psychologist Rainer Rosenzweig took over the chairmanship of the KORSO.
Goals and projects
In its declaration of principle, the association demands the consistent religious and ideological neutrality of the German state. Its task is to enable social plurality and to complete the separation of state and church . In this context, the association demanded, for example, that state payments to the churches be stopped. The association wants to stand up against what it sees as discrimination against atheists and agnostics against religious groups, for the equality of religious and ideological communities and for the separation between religion and state .
The principle of equal treatment should be implemented for all religious and ideological communities that are based on the constitution. In school, there should be an integrative compulsory subject for teaching values (as in Berlin “ethics” or in Brandenburg lifestyle, ethics and religion ). Furthermore, religiously or ideologically neutral social, cultural and educational institutions are to be promoted and religious and ideological communities treated equally as independent providers.
The Coordinating Council calls for consistent action against all types of intolerance, xenophobia and fundamentalism.
Each person should be granted at the end of life full autonomy over his life and advance directives have full legal validity. The umbrella organization also wants to ensure that the public culture of remembrance, commemoration and mourning is reformed in such a way that religious and ideological plurality is respected and the opinions and grief of non-religious people are respected. The forms of festive and celebration culture in secular organizations (naming, youth consecrations , weddings ...) should be shown more respect.
The Coordination Council has set itself the goal of representing secular organizations in ethics councils , broadcasting councils , federal auditing agencies and other institutions, as well as equal treatment in the public media , especially when it comes to broadcasting times. The Coordination Council has been a member of the sponsoring association of the Humanist Press Service since 2016 .
