Günther Wille

Günther Wille (born October 2, 1925 in Stuttgart , † December 29, 1996 in Tübingen ) was a German classical philologist and music historian . His fields of work were Greek and Roman music.

Life

Günther Wille studied classical philology , history, philosophy and education at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen from 1946 to 1951 , to which he remained loyal until the end of his life. In 1953 he was at Otto Weinreich with the dissertation The importance of music in the lives of the Romans doctorate . He achieved his habilitation in 1959 with the 1000-page book Akroasis: The acoustic realm of the senses in Greek literature until the end of the classical period . He then worked as a university lecturer at the Tübingen Department of Classical Philology until he was appointed full professor and director of the Department of Classical Philology in 1965 as the successor to Hildebrecht Hommel . His teaching description was "Classical Philology and Linguistics of Classical Languages". In 1991 he retired .

Willes main research area was the music of the Greeks and Romans. After completing his extensive qualification papers, he presented his research results in numerous monographs and essays, including the revised version of his dissertation entitled Musica Romana: The Meaning of Music in the Life of the Romans (Amsterdam 1967), Introduction to Roman Musical Life (Darmstadt 1977. Darmstadt 1988) and the posthumously published collection of essays on the history of ancient music (edited by Christine Walde ). In addition, Wille dealt with the structure of the historical works of the Roman historians Livius and Tacitus , for which he submitted basic monographs ( The structure of the Livian history work , Amsterdam 1973 and The structure of the works of Tacitus , Amsterdam 1983).
