Richard Kannicht

Richard Reinhold Kannicht (born October 5, 1931 in Arendsee (Altmark) ; † June 21, 2020 ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Kannicht was born as the son of the pastor Reinhold Kannicht and his wife Erika (née Clément). 1938–42 he attended elementary school, 1941–50 the Jahnschule (high school) in Salzwedel . In 1950 he passed the Abitur examination and began studying classical philology at the Free University of Berlin . In 1952 he moved to Heidelberg , where he studied Classical Studies and English . In 1956 he passed the first state examination. In 1958 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.

During his school service at the Hamburg Johanneum 1957-60 he passed the second state examination in 1959. 1960–65 he was a research assistant at the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Würzburg and, after completing his habilitation in 1965, was a private lecturer there. In 1969 he accepted a call as a full professor at the University of Tübingen , where he received the chair for Greek Philology I. 1971–72 he was dean of the Department of Classical and Cultural Studies, 1976–78 first chairman of the Mommsen Society , 1979 visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles , 1986 visiting professor at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch (New Zealand).

Kannicht was a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences from 1992, a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy from 1993 and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute from 1996 . In 1997 he retired.

Kannicht was married from 1957.

Research priorities

Kannicht dealt with Greek poetry of the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods, especially the Attic drama. With Bruno Snell and Stefan Radt he was one of the editors of the new Tragicorum Graecorum Fragmenta (1971–2004). He also dealt with poetry and literary theory and Greek metrics .
