Winfried Buehler

Winfried Bühler (born June 11, 1929 in Münster , † February 14, 2010 in Munich ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Winfried Bühler was the son of the professor for public law Ottmar Bühler and his wife Maria (née Miehels). He received his doctorate in 1957 in Munich under Rudolf Pfeiffer with the dissertation Die Europa des Moschos , which appeared in 1960 in the series Hermes -Einzelschriften. His habilitation took place in 1962. After four years as a private lecturer in Munich, he went to the University of California at Los Angeles as an associate professor in 1966 . He returned to Germany in 1967 and accepted a professorship from the University of Hamburg . At the same time he became head of the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae department . In 1989 he received an endowed professorship from the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft . In 1991 he retired . He last lived in Munich.

Bühler was a member of the Joachim Jungius Society of Sciences in Hamburg (since 1972), a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen (since 1980; previously corresponding member since 1974), Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy (since 1985) and corresponding member of Bavarian Academy of Sciences (since 1988). At the center of his research were Greek mythology and paremiography . He was known as a leading contributor to the lexicon of the early Greek epic and since 1982 has published a critical edition of the sayings of Zenobius of Athos , of which three volumes have appeared ( Zenobii Athoi proverbia , Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht ).
