Johann Ludwig Christoph Wilhelm Döderlein , from 1862 Knight von Döderlein (born December 19, 1791 in Jena , † November 9, 1863 in Erlangen ; Latinized name: Ludovicus Doederlein ), was a German classical philologist .

Life

He studied philology at the Lyzeum in Munich in 1810 , in Heidelberg in 1811 and from 1813 in Erlangen . There he received his doctorate in 1814 with a paper on a new Sophocles edition. In 1815 he completed his habilitation with the script Oratio in Academiae Friderico-Alexandrinae solemnibus saecularibus ... in Berlin and in the same year received a professorship for classical philology in Bern . In 1819 he became rector of the Erlangen grammar school and second professor for classical philology, also in Erlangen . In 1826 he became the first professor of philology and director of the philological seminary and in 1827 also professor of eloquence. In 1854 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1862 he resigned from his position as director of the grammar school. He was the academic teacher of Iwan von Müller and Karl von Burger .

He was a member of the Corps Saxonia Heidelberg .

family

Ludwig Döderlein was born as the son of the rector and professor Johann Christoph Döderlein , who died when Ludwig was one year old. The philosopher and theologian Immanuel Niethammer became his stepfather when his mother remarried in 1797.

Honors

In 1862 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown , associated with the Bavarian nobility. In 1848 he received the Knight's Cross First Class of Merit from Saint Michael and in 1860 the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art . Döderleinstraße was named after him in the inner city of Erlangen. In addition, a memorial plaque at his residence at Friedrichstrasse 40 in Erlangen reminds of him.
