Adolf Lippold (born October 23, 1926 in Erlangen ; † June 11, 2005 in Regensburg ) was a German ancient historian .

Adolf Lippold, son of Georg Lippold , received his doctorate in 1952 from the University of Erlangen under Johannes Straub . In 1960 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bonn . From 1968 until his retirement in 1994 Lippold taught at the University of Regensburg as a professor of ancient history .

Lippold was the editor of Regensburg Historical Research . Lippold, who specialized in the history of late Roman antiquity , also wrote various articles for large projects such as Pauly's Realencyclopedia of Classical Classical Antiquity (RE), the Little Pauly and the Reallexikon für Antiquity and Christianity . Lippold's monograph on Theodosius I and the corresponding article in the RE are still regarded as important studies, as is his work on the Historia Augusta , although his theses on the dating of this source did not prevail.
