Laurent (South Dakota)

Location of Laurent in South Dakota

Laurent was an originally planned settlement in McCook County , South Dakota for the deaf , hard of hearing and other sign language users. It was to be named after Laurent Clerc , an American pioneer of sign language. The project was an initiative of Marvin Miller , a former deaf journalist. The city should cover 130 hectares and offer space for at least 2500 people. According to Miller, funding for the project was secured by his private funds and that of a group of private investors. More than 100 families had already expressed their interest in moving into the settlement. The project was also criticized because it would isolate the deaf and exclude the rest of society.

Ultimately, however, the settlement was not realized.
