Peter Herz (ancient historian)

Peter Herz (born November 18, 1948 in Bad Ems ) is a German ancient historian .

Peter Herz passed his Abitur in 1968 and studied history , Latin and archeology in Mainz and Oxford from 1968 to 1975 . His academic teachers included a. Hans Ulrich Instinsky , Heinz Bellen , Alfons Becker and Alois Gerlich and Ludwig Petry . His doctorate took place in 1975 in Ancient History on the subject of investigations into the festival calendar of the Roman Empire using dated Latin consecration and honorary inscriptions . A year later he passed the state examination for the teaching post in secondary schools in the subjects of history and Latin and was trainee teacher in 1977/78. At the same time he worked as a lecturer for epigraphy at the University of Mainz in 1976 and 1977 .

After receiving a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute , Herz was initially a research assistant and from 1981 to 1986 university assistant in Mainz, where he completed his habilitation in 1985 with the study of Roman economic legislation using the example of food supply . In the following years he taught as a private lecturer, professor on a temporary basis (from 1986), university lecturer for life (from 1991) and adjunct professor (from 1992) at the University of Mainz, interrupted by substitute professorships at the universities of Darmstadt (1985), Basel (WS 1986/87) and at the University of Heidelberg (1988–1989). From 1994 until his retirement in 2014, Herz was Professor of Ancient History at the University of Regensburg .
