Hans Ulrich Instinsky (born March 16, 1907 in Freiberg in Saxony; † June 30, 1973 in Mainz ) was a German ancient historian .

At the humanistic grammar school, Hans Ulrich Instinsky was significantly influenced by Karl Buchheim . After graduating from high school in Freiberg in 1926, Hans Ulrich Instinsky studied history, classical philology and German at the University of Munich for three semesters . However, under the influence of Helmut Berve , he decided on the ancient history and went there with him in 1927, when Berve was called to Leipzig . In Leipzig he studied classical philology and classical archeology for two semesters. This was followed by a further six semesters at the University of Freiburg and the doctorate there in 1931 with Walther Kolbe with the thesis The writing time of the writing of the State of Athens . He broke off a planned academic career because of the global economic crisis and worked as a journalist for five years.

In 1936 Instinsky took over the publication of the Roman milestone inscriptions for the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum as a scientific assistant at the Berlin Academy of Sciences . His rejection of National Socialism resulting from his Christian faith hampered his academic career. Due to illness, he only had to do military service for a short time. Instinsky's habilitation at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin was prevented by Wilhelm Weber ; Instead, he completed his habilitation in Frankfurt am Main in 1942 with Matthias Gelzer on the subject of Emperor and Eternity and gave his trial lecture in March 1943 in Heidelberg through the mediation of his college friend Hans Schaefer . The Berlin Faculty of Philosophy, however, refused to transfer the venia legendi to him. Instead, Instinsky took over a professorship in Hamburg in 1943 through Bruno Snell's mediation . In the same year he and Herbert Nesselhauf refused to be named as the editor of the third volume of the new edition of Prosopographia Imperii Romani instead of Arthur Stein and Edmund Groag, who had been dismissed as Jews . Instinsky received a lectureship in Hamburg in February 1945 and stayed there until 1948. That year he accepted a professorship for Ancient History at the University of Mainz . He turned down appointments to Würzburg, Berlin and Bochum. Since 1969 Instinsky was a full member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature .

He published over 150 titles. The focus was earlier on Hellenism, the Roman Principal Period and late antiquity. Instinsky dealt intensively with pagan antiquity and Christianity in his works and research. He was also active in the epigraphic and numismatic field.

He was married. The marriage had six children. He died of heart failure in June 1973.
