Karl Arthur Buchheim (born March 27, 1889 in Dresden , † August 24, 1982 in Munich ) was a German historian and philosopher .

Life and career

Buchheim was born in Dresden in 1889 as the son of the post office clerk Arthur Buchheim and his wife Nanny Buchheim (née Joly). After completing his secondary school leaving certificate in 1908, Buchheim studied history, German and Latin with Wilhelm Wundt , Wilhelm Stieda , Emil Jungmann , Georg Witkowski , Ernst Windisch and Max Heinze at the universities of Jena , Bonn and Leipzig until 1913 . He was at Karl Lamprecht Dr. phil. is doing his doctorate with the work The position of the Kölnische Zeitung in pre-March Rhenish liberalism .

From the beginning of his studies in 1908 he was a member of the St. Pauli Jena singers , and after moving to Leipzig also of the St. Pauli University singers in Leipzig . In 1915 he was injured in the war on the Eastern Front .

From 1919 to 1934 he was a teacher in Freiberg . From 1934 to 1945 he lived in the " inner emigration ".

In 1942 he left the Protestant Church and became a Catholic. He had contacts with the resistance around Carl Friedrich Goerdeler . He then worked as a freelance writer and publishing director until 1945.

He was a co-founder of the Democratic Party of Germany (DPD) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Leipzig. For the latter he was a city ​​councilor and from 1946 to 1950 a member of the Saxon state parliament . He was also a private lecturer at the University of Leipzig.

There he became director of the Leipzig University Library .

In 1950 he became professor of history at the Technical University of Munich . He died in that city in 1982.
