Heinz Bellen

Heinz Bellen (born August 1, 1927 in Neuss ; † July 27, 2002 in Mainz ) was a German ancient historian .

The son of a merchant family passed his Abitur in 1947 at Görres-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf. Then he worked as a commercial clerk. From 1949 he studied history and classical philology at the University of Cologne . In 1955 he received his doctorate there by Hans Volkmann with the thesis Contributions to the jurisprudence of the city-Roman courts under the Principate of Gaius and Claudius . In the same year he also passed the state examination for teaching at schools. From 1955 to 1962 Bellen was active in the school service. In 1962 he got an assistant position at the Institute for Classical Studies at the University of Cologne, where he qualified as a professor in 1968 with studies on slave flight in the Roman Empire . In 1969 he was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor at the University of Cologne. This was followed by his appointment as a full professor of ancient history at the University of Mainz in 1974 as the successor to Hans Ulrich Instinsky . In 1993 he retired.

Until his death, Heinz Bellen and Heinz Heinen headed the project funded by the German Research Foundation and the associated “Ancient Slavery” department. Since 1975 he has been a corresponding member and since 1978 a full member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz. From 1978 he chaired the Commission for the History of Antiquity and headed the “Ancient Slavery” project for almost 25 years. The project became one of the most successful in international slave research. Under his direction, 27 volumes have appeared in the series of researches on ancient slavery .
