He had an older brother, Johann Dietrich Eduard Lauer (* 1805), and, from his father's second marriage to Caroline Charlotte Wilhelmine von Honorst († 1871), a stepbrother Karl Leopold Ludwig Richard Lauer (1826–1863).
Career
Lauer received instruction in basic subjects from his father until 1817. He then attended the grammar school in Arnsburgergasse in Wetzlar ("Arnsburger-Hof") until 1825, from which today's Goetheschule Wetzlar emerged . In 1830 he became a company surgeon , in 1836 a pensioner physician at the Friedrich Wilhelm Institute and in this role assigned to the general hospital in Hamburg. In 1839 he returned to the Charité as a medical officer and was transferred to Schwedt as a regimental doctor in 1843 . A little later he returned to Berlin with the same rank. Prince Wilhelm appointed him his personal physician in 1844. As such, he accompanied Wilhelm on all trips and campaigns .
In 1845 Lauer completed his habilitation as a private lecturer at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität , in 1854 he became a professor of semiotics and general therapy at the medical-surgical academy.
In 1864 Lauer rose to the position of general physician in the Guard Corps ; In 1866 he was ennobled and was henceforth called von Lauer. On his fiftieth anniversary of the service, the university appointed him full honorary professor . In 1879 he succeeded Heinrich Gottfried Grimms General Staff Doctor in the Army, Head of Military Medical Services and the Medical Department of the War Ministry and Director of the Military Medical Training Institutes. In 1881 he received the rank of lieutenant general .
In 1888 he was presented with a so-called jubilee gift of 30,000 marks for his service anniversary, which was intended for a Lauerstiftung to support the survivors of medical officers.
