General Staff Doctor Erika Franke

The General Staff Doctor is a rank of the Bundeswehr and former German armed forces. In earlier German armed forces, the general staff doctor was also the name for a service position .

The general staff doctor is one of the ranks of the Bundeswehr . General Staff physicians are medical officers with a license to practice as a doctor . The rank of General Staff Doctor is determined by the Federal President with the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of the soldiers on the basis of the Soldiers Act .

Positions for general staff doctors are only shown in the Central Medical Service of the Bundeswehr . General staff doctors are usually:

appointment

The legal basis for the appointment as general staff doctor is set by the Soldiers' Career Ordinance (SLV) and, in addition, the Central Service Regulations (ZDv) 20/7. In detail, however, the careers there are only regulated up to the rank of senior physician . The appointment as general staff doctor, on the other hand, is essentially a decision to be made by the employer on the basis of the suitability, qualifications and performance of the soldier, which is hardly subject to further requirements. In practice, only professional officers who have a license to practice medicine and at least the medical expertise of a senior physician are appointed as general staff physician. According to the Soldier Career Ordinance, the ranks should be passed through regularly in the order described in the order of the Federal President and a minimum period of service in the previous rank of at least one year should be the rule; General staff physicians had previously been general physicians in practice for several years. There is no special examination to be taken before promotion to the rank of generals; in practice, however, many general staff doctors have completed the general staff / admiralty staff course at the command academy of the Bundeswehr .

Additional career badges in the form of a staff of Aesculapia serve to differentiate between general staff doctors . In the career badge for doctors, the snake winds in a double twist , for dentists in a single twist around the staff.

The rank was newly created with the sixth order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of soldiers from May 5, 1966.

Others

With regard to the power of command within the meaning of the Superiors Ordinance and Military Disciplinary Code , with regard to salary and with regard to equivalent, subordinate and superior ranks within the meaning of ZDv 14/5, general staff physicians are also treated as major general . When it comes to medical issues, in particular, medical officers are often the superiors of higher-ranking soldiers. In the order of promotion to be regularly followed according to the Soldiers' Career Ordinance and ZDv 20/7, the rank preceding the general staff doctor is the general physician and the next rank the general chief staff doctor . The rank of general staff physician is held only in army and air force uniforms ; the appropriate rank for naval uniform bearers is the admiralty doctor .

Prussia and Bavaria

In the Prussian Army and in the Bavarian Army , the "General Staff Doctor of the Army" was the chief of the entire military medical system. At the same time he was head of the medical department of the Prussian War Ministry and head of the medical corps . Equal to him was the General Staff Doctor of the Imperial Navy , who was at the same time head of the medical department of the Reichsmarinamt and head of the medical corps of the Navy. As with the Lieutenant General, the appointment as General Staff Doctor was associated with the title of Excellency .

Wehrmacht

In the Wehrmacht, the general staff physician was the next higher general rank in the medical service. He was the same rank as the lieutenant general in the army and air force , the admiral staff doctor in the navy and the SS group leader and lieutenant general in the Waffen SS . The shoulder piece was similar to that of the Chief Staff Officer , but only showed a general star.

Austria-Hungary

The Joint Army had two regular general staff physicians who also had the rank of major general. One headed the medical department in the Austro-Hungarian War Ministry and at the same time was head of the military medical officer corps, the other was president of the military medical committee. The medical chiefs of some general commands were also general staff doctors.
