Erika Franke (born May 8, 1954 in Berlin ) is a German military doctor and a senior medical officer . D. the Bundeswehr in the rank of general staff doctor . Most recently she was in command of the Bundeswehr Medical Academy .

Erika Franke is the first woman in the German Armed Forces to have achieved the rank of two-star general and, after the now retired military doctor Verena von Weymarn, the second woman in the general rank of the German Armed Forces . She is also the first female Bundeswehr general from the New States .

Life

In East Berlin, was born in 1954 and in Liebenwalde grew up, Erika Franke studied human medicine at the Humboldt University of Berlin and received in 1978 their license to practice as a doctor . At the age of 30 she became a specialist in microbiology and infection epidemiology .

After completing her studies, Erika Franke worked as a doctor at the People's Police Hospital in East Berlin in 1978 and was a member of the German People's Police in 1984 . She received her doctorate in medicine on March 13, 1986 and, after German reunification, was accepted into the Bundeswehr as a senior field doctor on October 3, 1990. She became deputy head of the Central Institute of the Medical Service of the Bundeswehr in Berlin . Twice - 1997 at SFOR in Bosnia-Herzegovina and 2000/2001 at KFOR in Kosovo  - she was on assignment abroad in the Balkans as head of a microbiological laboratory.

In 2001 she became head of department at the Bundeswehr Medical Service in Bonn . Then she was deputy head of department in the Bundeswehr Operations Command in Potsdam . Until March 31, 2006 she headed the Institute for Medical Occupational Safety and Environment of the Bundeswehr in Berlin .

From April 2006 to September 2009 she was chief physician at the Ulm Army Hospital . In this role she was promoted to general physician. From September 2009 to June 2013 she was chief of staff at the Bundeswehr Medical Service . Since July 1, 2013, she has been the commander of the Bundeswehr Medical Academy and was promoted to General Staff Doctor at the end of October 2013 .

On May 12, 2016, she gave up command of the Medical Academy and retired on June 1, 2016.

On July 12, 2017, she was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit .

Erika Franke is married and has two grown children.
