Verena von Weymarn

Verena Merethe von Weymarn (born von Stritzky , born July 16, 1943 in Riga / Latvia ) is a German doctor and retired medical officer . D. in the rank of general. She was the first female general in German history.

biography

Verena von Stritzky was born as the daughter of the historian Karl-Christoph von Stritzky in the then German-occupied Riga. Her father died as a soldier in Russia before she was born. After the war she grew up in the Federal Republic of Germany. From 1964 to 1971 she studied medicine in Göttingen and Munich and received her doctorate in October 1976 with a thesis on the effect of seat belts. She was married to the Estonian architect Alexander von Weymarn († 1998); the family has two daughters.

In September 1976 Verena von Weymarn joined the German Armed Forces as a medical officer in the Air Force . According to her own statements, she was motivated to take this step through regular working hours, the variety of tasks and the opportunity to work as a doctor in the troop service and in the clinical area.

From 1976 to April 1980 she worked as a troop doctor with the Air Force Supply Regiment 1 in Erding . As early as 1978 she was taken on as a professional soldier and promoted to senior staff doctor. At the same location, she was squadron chief of the Air Force first aid squadron from 1980 to 1983 . In April 1983 he was transferred to the Air Force Support Group Command South in Karlsruhe ( Baden-Württemberg ) and spent six months in the USA with participation in the international aviation doctor course. The next station in October 1985 was the 1st  Air Force Division in Meßstetten (Baden-Württemberg) as a division doctor. In 1986 he was promoted to senior physician . From April 1989 Verena von Weymarn took over the management of the Bundeswehr hospital in Giessen as chief physician. In 1993 she stayed at the NATO Defense College in Rome for six months .

On March 23, 1994 Verena von Weymarn was promoted to general doctor by the then Federal Defense Minister Volker Rühe with effect from April 1 . This made her the first female general in German history.

In April 1994 she took over the post of General Doctor of the Air Force in Lohmar- Heide near Siegburg ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). She was responsible for the entire medical service of the Air Force and thus in the highest instance the medical responsibility for all Air Force soldiers. In addition, the aeronautical department was also responsible for the flying personnel of the army and the navy. When he was transferred to the Bundeswehr Medical Office in October 1995, General Doctor Verena von Weymarn took on the role of Deputy Head of Office and Chief of Staff of the Medical Office with around 270 employees. Later she took over the management of the Bundeswehr Central Hospital in Koblenz .

On August 1, 2004, General Doctor Verena von Weymarn retired.
