Voll beside it, full in life (original title: Freaks and Geeks ) is a short-lived youth series , which was produced in 1999 and 2000 and tells of the problems of growing up for a group of teenagers at a US high school in the early 1980s .

The series was first broadcast in German on February 2, 2002 on the Austrian broadcaster ORF eins . This version was also broadcast in German-speaking Switzerland from October 4, 2003 . In Germany itself, this German version was shown on October 6, 2005 on First German Television . However, the program was broadcast on the nights from Wednesday to Thursday around 2:40 a.m.

action

The action takes place in 1980. In the center of the action are the siblings Lindsay and Sam Weir and their roles at the school.

The 16-year-old Lindsay tries to stop being branded as a nerd and tries to get into the circle of truants and “cool guys” (referred to as freaks in the series ). This regularly leads to conflicts with her strictly religious childhood friend Millie, who cannot understand Lindsay's change and tries to save her from certain social decline.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old Sam has to be content with the place of school geek and outsider. With his two friends Neal and Bill, he tries to gain recognition from the other students and to impress the classmates. Neal is in love with Lindsay, but has to admit in the course of the series that he has no chance with his friend's two-year-old sister.

Background information

Due to the low ratings, the station NBC discontinued the series after broadcasting only twelve episodes in March 2000; the remaining six episodes already filmed were not broadcast until July and September and October of that year by NBC and the cable channel Fox Family Channel. In the meantime, dramedy has achieved a certain cult status in the USA, for example in 2007 by Time magazine in a list of the 100 best television series of all time.

For some of the actors, the series, filmed in various locations in California, marked the beginning of their film careers, for example for James Franco ( Spider-Man 1–3 ), Jason Segel ( Never again sex with the ex , How I Met Your Mother ) , Linda Cardellini ( Scooby-Doo 1 + 2 , Brokeback Mountain , Emergency Room - The Emergency Room ) and Seth Rogen ( Donnie Darko , virgin (40), male, looking for ... , the first time ).
