Apatow Productions is an American film and television production company that exclusively produces comedies .

history

Judd Apatow founded Apatow Productions in 1999 and started producing television series. However, after his first two self-produced television series Voll beside it, full in life , with James Franco and Seth Rogen and American Campus - Ready for university? After a few episodes were canceled and its three pilot episodes, Sick in the Head , North Hollywood and Life on Parole, were not broadcast, Apatow Productions only produced comedies .

With "Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy" Apatow produced one of the most successful comedies of the 2004 film year and brought out the sequel "Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie" direct-to-video . Here you could see Will Ferrell (also wrote the screenplay with) and Christina Applegate in the lead roles. In 2005, Apatow Productions managed the financially successful comedy "Virgo (40), Male, Seeks" with Steve Carell and Seth Rogen , with Judd Apatow writing the script with Steve Carell and directing it himself. In 2006 Apatow produced "Ricky Bobby - King of Racing Drivers " , with Will Ferrell as Ricky Bobby , John C. Reilly as his best friend and Sacha Baron Cohen as the gay, French ex-Formula 1 driver.

The company produced three comedies in 2007. Judd Apatow wrote the screenplay for the first time and also directed it, with Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl in front of the camera, who will become parents after a one-night stand . This was followed by “Superbad,” by the writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg , who started writing the script when they were 13 years old and had a finished draft at 15. The film is supposed to pay homage to their school days, which is why the two main characters in the film also have the first names of the scriptwriters. In Walk Hard , the main character Dewey Cox (played by John C. Reilly ) is very similar to Johnny Cash and meets personalities like Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley on his travels .

In the film year 2008 the company produced four films. In "Drillbit Taylor," with Owen Wilson and Leslie Mann , directed by Steven Brill , "Never Again Sex With Your Ex," by Nicholas Stoller , starring Jason Segel and Kristen Bell . "The Stepbrothers" (by Adam McKay ) with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly and the crime comedy "Pineapple Express" with Seth Rogen and James Franco, with Rogen again writing the script with his friend Goldberg.

In 2009, the films "Year One" with Jack Black by Harold Ramis and the tragic comedy "As Life Played" with Adam Sandler , Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann and Eric Bana were released , with Judd Apatow as a screenwriter and director. The following year, Nicholas Stoller's "The Man's Trip" appeared , starring Russell Brand and Jonah Hill in the lead and P. Diddy and Rose Byrne in a supporting role.

The company has three projects planned for 2011, Bridesmaids (directed by Paul Feig ), Wanderlust (directed by David Wain) with Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd, and Business Tripp .

Projects

The following film projects were already planned, but could not be implemented for various reasons. A few projects were already in preproduction.

  • Untitled Motorcycle Police Comedy - New Line Cinema : The film, planned for 2003, was to become the main characters of Will Ferrell and Jack Black after Judd Apatow was entrusted with the writing and directing duties. As for the plot, it is known that Ferrell's character was moved from Irvine to Los Angeles and that Black's character, who came from a police family, was to become the new partner. This would have meant the directorial debut for Apatow, but could not be implemented because Black was still in front of the camera for School of Rock and Ferrell for Buddy - The Christmas Elf .
  • The Middle Child - Universal Studios: The film was written by Jonah Hill , where Hill's character would have been the youngest of three children to find out that his parents put a child up for adoption before he was born. This brother would have become the character of Seth Rogen from Hill's point of view . Apatow and Hill decided against the project because the plot would have been too heavily based on The Stepbrothers .
  • Untitled Dan Mazer Comedy - Universal Studios: Nothing was revealed about the plot or cast after the announcement (2006). Dan Mazer was to write the script and direct the film.
  • The Long D - Universal Studios: Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote the screenplay for this comedy in 2006. The film is about Dave and Rena who fall in love during their high school years and want to have a long-distance relationship there attend both different colleges. The project should be implemented in 2007. This was revoked because the film was given priority the first time and then all three worked on other projects. So far nothing is known about a possible production.
  • Pure Imagination - Columbia Pictures : Jonah Hill wrote the screenplay for the film again for Apatow Productions, in which he would have played the main role. Hill would have had an imaginary wife after a traumatic experience. Harold Ramis would have worked as a director, but the project was put on hold for the time being.
  • Attorneys at Raw - Universal Studios: The implementation of this film was also announced for 2007, with David Krumholtz writing the script, receiving one of the two leading roles and speaking out for the second lead role for Seth Rogen. The film was supposed to tell the story of two rappers who become lawyers.
  • A Whole New Hugh - Universal Studios: Universal Studios bought the rights in 2007 and announced completion for 2007. Ed Helms was to star in a leading role, who co-wrote the script with Jake Fleischer and Ian Berger .
