Drillbit Taylor (Original title: Drillbit Taylor ) is an American comedy film from 2008 . Directed by Steven Brill and written by Kristofor Brown and Seth Rogen .

action

Emmit, Ryan, and Wade are new high school students . They are attacked by their classmate Filkins and his friend Ronnie. Complaints to the school principal remain unsuccessful, as Filkins and his behavior are already known to him and Filkins promises to improve. Emmit, Ryan and Wade place an ad in Soldier of Fortune magazine , which includes homeless, deserted soldier Drillbit Taylor. The students hire him as their bodyguard.

Taylor is not interested in the job, but is only interested in the assets of the boys and their families so that they can emigrate to Canada with the money. But after he sneaked into the school as a substitute teacher and fell in love with a teacher, he changed his mind and started working seriously for the client. He tries to undo a break-in carried out by homeless friends in Wade's house by retrieving all stolen items. After Wade and Ryan have challenged Filkins classmates and fight in his house at a party, Emmit and later also Drillbit intervene, and can ultimately defeat Filkins. After he throws a samurai sword at the boys in the presence of police officers who have been summoned, which Drillbit catches with his hand and thereby loses a finger, Filkins is arrested. Filkins is then shipped to his parents in Hong Kong for violating the alcohol ban so often.

Reviews

Louise Keller wrote on Urban Cinefile that Owen Wilson could recite the “craziest” lines of dialogue without losing his credibility. The film contains some crazy lines of dialogue and its script makes the main character seem "clever" while the other adults come across as "idiots" . The film is a little too long.

Mick LaSalle wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle of March 21, 2008 that there was a gap between the talent of Owen Wilson and the quality of his films. Drillbit Taylor is still a "horrific, uncomfortable" film in which the actor is the best. One cannot say whether the story focuses on the character he embodies or on the young people. It works much longer than it is.

backgrounds

The film was shot in Los Angeles . Its production amounted to an estimated 40 million US dollars . The film opened in Australian theaters on March 20, 2008, in the US on March 21, and the German theatrical release was on May 15, 2008.

The idea for the film comes from John Hughes (under the pseudonym Edmond Dantès ), who directed, wrote and produced scripts for numerous comedies in the 1980s (for example Kevin - Alone , Pretty in Pink and Ferris makes blue ). Hughes died a year later, making Drillbit his last involvement in a film.

When Filkins appears, one hears the theme from Cape Fear (1991), which heralds the psychopath Max Cady ( Robert De Niro ) there.
