Freak 'n' Roll ... Into the Fog Warpaint Warpaint Live

Warpaint is the seventh studio album by the American rock band The Black Crowes . It was released in early March 2008, almost seven years after its predecessor Lions .

History of origin

After the temporary separation of the band ( Hiatus ) from the end of 2001 to 2005, the reunited Black Crowes played numerous concerts from March 2005 to the end of 2007, where they played songs from their previous albums and various cover songs. Paul Stacey was the lead guitarist in the band from 2006 to 2007. He was already a member of Chris Robinson's band New Earth Mud and had to replace Marc Ford at short notice in August 2006 . At Warpaint he worked as a producer, he also played the twelve-string guitar on the track Whoa Mule .

Warpaint was recorded in July 2007 at Allaire Studios in Shokan, New York. During the sessions the band was supported by the guitarist Luther Dickinson. Dickinson is also a member of the North Mississippi Allstars and was part of the Black Crowes after the release of Warpaint. Keyboardist Adam MacDougall was also involved in the recording and played his first concert with the band on August 3, 2007. He replaced Rob Clores, who stood in for long-time keyboardist Eddie Hawrysch in 2006. The unpublished new titles have not yet been presented at the other concerts in 2007. They didn't get their live premiere until after the album was released.

Warpaint is the first release on the Silver Arrow label, which the band founded .

reception

  • Stephen Thomas Erlewine writes on Allmusic.com: “What the Black Crowes have done here is what true journeymen do: they don't renounce their past, they build upon it, finding hidden depths within it, shaping tradition after their own image to make it sound fresh. They're old-fashioned, but in the best sense: they're in it for the long haul, which the superb Warpaint proves beyond a shadow of a doubt. “ (The Black Crowes pretend to be true traveling companions: They don't deny theirs Past, but build on it, find hidden depths and shape tradition according to its own image in order to make it sound fresh. They are old-fashioned, but in the best sense of the word: They go for the long haul, which the superb Warpaint proves beyond doubt.)
  • Alan Light wrote on Rollingstone.com : “The Black Crowes have fallen out, broken up and been written off as washed-up. ... They've now been around as long as some of their own idols were when the Robinsons first started. But with Warpaint, for the first time in a longtime, the Black Crowes seem like a band with a future. "
  • Andrew Mueller wrote on Uncut.co.uk : "Seven years is a long time, to be sure - but not, it seems, long enough for The Black Crowes to get around to significantly expanding their palette of influences. ... At their best, though, Black Crowes are still ringing fabulously true, a continuing and useful reproach against the temptations of obscurantism and irony. "
  • Christian Schlage wrote on intro.de : “The disagreements of the brothers seem to have been settled for the time being, the reformed band (guitarist Luther Dickinson and keyboardist Adam MacDougall have joined) carries the sound - as in their best times, a dirty mixture of rock, blues, country - with a lot of soul. With Warpaint, of course, the old crows do not reinvent themselves, nor do they expand the sound that has become their trademark. The band is just themselves - and that is exactly what makes the new album strong. "
