action

The successful but lonely comedian and actor George Simmons learns that he has a rare type of leukemia for which only experimental treatment exists. Since these drugs are only effective in eight percent of patients, he assumes that he will die soon.

George improvises a somber program with allusions to his imminent death. In the cabaret club The Improv , in which he creates a depressing mood, he meets the unsuccessful stand-up comedian Ira Wright, who has to appear immediately after him and reacts to the bad mood by making fun of George. George then hired Ira as a gag writer and personal assistant.

First, George, who has no close social relationships, only tells Ira about his illness and befriends him. He later told colleagues and acquaintances about the life-threatening illness, including his childhood sweetheart Laura, who forgave George for breaking their relationship through infidelity.

When George learns that the treatment is working for him, he wants to change his life, which was previously marked by thoughtfulness, and appears again in front of a large audience. Ira informs Laura of George's recovery, and Laura invites the two men to her house, where she lives with her children and her husband, who is often abroad on business trips. Laura reports that she is not happy with her often absent husband, who - like George at the time - is not loyal to her. She goes on an affair with George and they both envision a future together.

Shortly afterwards, Laura's husband Clarke surprisingly returns from China , but is not jealous of George at first, as he thinks George is terminally ill. When he realizes this mistake, he leaves the house to fly to China. But Laura drives after him and makes up with him at the airport. After a fight with Clarke, George and Ira have to leave. They quarrel on the drive home, and George fires his employee. But finally George turns to Ira and tells him gags that he wrote for him so that they reconcile again.

criticism

“All the open and encrypted autobiographical aspects and references give 'Funny People' a certain charm without question. It's fun to be involved in this strange game of hide and seek between a successful filmmaker and a Hollywood star. But over time the film loses itself. The rather unusual, almost experimental mixture of comedy and sentimentality, deadly seriousness and childish silliness gradually tips into pure self-reflection. "

- Sascha Westphal

"Wistful insider look at the stand-up comedian scene by and with relevant professionals."

- Heike Angermeier

“… A film about comedians that is more interested in their uncomfortable side. The first thing you realize is that comedians are not necessarily nice people. "

- Barbara Schweizerhof

"Adam Sandler's best performance."

- Roger Ebert

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
