action

Music label owner Pete is married to boutique owner Debbie, with whom he has two children. The couple face various difficulties. Debbie turns 40 and looks forward to her birthday only to a limited extent. Pete's record label isn't doing particularly well financially, and musician Graham Parker's recently released album is proving to be a flop. Her daughters Sadie and Charlotte fight constantly and add extra hustle and bustle to family life.

The couple want to celebrate Debbie's birthday in a romantic hotel, but after enjoying hash biscuits, the staff makes them uncomfortable.

After Debbie and her friends Jason and Barb seek advice, she decides to put family life back on its feet. She does more sports and cooks healthier for her family, which is just as little popular with men and children as there are new guidelines for television and Internet consumption. She seeks contact with her father, from whom she has been estranged for years. Pete is also said to stop giving money to his chronically clumsy father Larry until he regains control of his financial problems.

Shortly afterwards, Debbie discovers that she is pregnant. At first she wants to think about the next steps on her own, but is more and more stressed and finally insults a school child who teased her daughter Sadie. His mother Catherine then clashes with Pete, which eventually leads to a meeting with the school management, where Pete and Debbie act stupid and reject any responsibility, whereupon Catherine completely loses her composure.

Debbie fears that her colleague Desi is stealing money from the boutique's cash register and finally confronts her after visiting the club together. Desi then reveals that she works as an escort girl on the side. Debbie then learns that Jodi, who has previously appeared to be trustworthy, stole the money. Debbie then dismisses her.

On Pete's 40th birthday, he finally gets into an argument with his father about money, and when he hears Debbie talking about the pregnancy, he unceremoniously takes his racing bike and leaves the party. After crashing into an open car door, he gets into a fight with the driver. Debbie and Larry find him and take him to a hospital, where Larry apologizes to Debbie for everything. She forgives him and then reconciles with Pete, who tells her that he is looking forward to a third child and that she is worried for no reason.

Both attend a concert by Ryan Adams , where Debbie suggests that Pete be offered a contract with Pete's label after the show.

reception

The reviews for the film were largely positive. In addition to the cast, the original script ideas and Apatow's direction were particularly praised.

“'Always anger at 40' is long and uneven, sometimes even annoying, but above all one thing: good! Judd Apatow talks sometimes hilariously, sometimes dramatically about the midlife crisis and all sorts of other problems. Despite all the idiosyncrasy and exaggeration, he always keeps an eye on the real core of things. "

"Always Trouble at 40 is a surprisingly good comedy that doesn't necessarily reinvent the wheel, but skilfully avoids hackneyed platitudes and is full of original ideas and loving details."

- Moviemaze

“Sometimes you get the impression that Apatow would be in better hands with the format of a series - as he proved with the great first and only season of Voll besides, voll im Leben (Freaks and Geeks, 1999-2000) - than with the meandering number revues of his feature films . But that is doing the films injustice. First of all, because they offer excellent experimental arrangements for the talent of its actors. On the other hand, the absent-minded action [..] also makes it possible to deviate from conventional patterns. In contrast to the many films in which Apatow only acts as a producer, the characters here are more than caricatures, their problems are also taken seriously and do not have to submit to a constant punch line.
