The King of Staten Island is a Judd Apatow film that was first made available online to Tribeca Film Festival participants on April 15, 2020. It is a partial biopic about stand-up comedian Pete Davidson .

action

Scott Carlin grew up in Staten Island. His father was a firefighter and lost his life extinguishing a hotel fire. The then 7-year-old Scott idealized his father from then on and never got over his death.

17 years later, Scott is still living in his mother Margie's house and dropped out of school. He hangs out with his buddies in the basement, smokes marijuana and keeps persuading them to get him tattooed. When he meets Ray, his mother's new friend, who is also a firefighter, he gets to know this community better and learns that his father was not just the shining hero.

Biographical

Pete Davidson's father, Matthew, was a firefighter with the New York City Fire Department and was killed in rescue operations during the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001 . At the age of 16, he began his first attempts at stand-up comedian in a bowling alley in Staten Island , where a group of friends encouraged him to take the stage. Davidson has had Crohn's disease since he was a teenager . He attended St. Joseph by the Sea High School, then Tottenville High School, and finally Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, where he graduated in 2011.

production

Staff and cast

Directed by Judd Apatow , who co- wrote the script with Davidson and Dave Sirus . Michael Meyns remarks about Staten Island, where not only Scott lives in the film, but also Davidson grew up, and gave the film its title, that this New York district is far away from the glamor of Manhattan due to its peripheral location and therefore often called the "island of failure" and all those who didn't make it. Karsten Munt writes in the Berliner Zeitung that Davidson was applying something new and personal to the Apatow stencil. The King of Staten Island is based to a large extent on Davidson's life, which does not show the bourgeois lightheartedness of earlier Apatow comedies, but a childhood trauma and a real depression. Davidson brings an irresistible, always melancholy charisma from his past into the film, according to Munt: “His home, the 'garbage island' Staten Island, which houses the proletariat of New York, replaces the comfortable, socially secure suburbs, the Apatows Films populated in the Bush era. "

The film turns the young comedian into an unsuccessful tattoo artist and continues in the plot what could have become of Davidson if he hadn't found the outlet as a comedian to turn his demons outside. The 9/11 background has been omitted entirely. Still, the film is dedicated to Davidson's father.

Davidson's name is Scott Carlin in the movie. Marisa Tomei plays his mother Margie, Maude Apatow his sister Claire. Bel Powley can be seen in the role of Kelsey, whom he has known since childhood and who now has a casual sex relationship. Bill Burr plays Ray, his mother's new boyfriend who is also a firefighter.

Film music and publication

The score was composed by Michael Andrews . The soundtrack album, which comprises a total of six pieces of music, was released for download by Back Lot Music on June 10, 2020.

The film was due to premiere on March 13, 2020 as the opening film of the South by Southwest Film Festival . A few days before the start of the festival, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was postponed to an unknown time, including the premiere of the film. The film was supposed to be shown at the Tribeca Film Festival in mid-April 2020 , but this was also postponed. Nevertheless, the film was made available online from April 15-26, 2020, the festival's original time slot. At the beginning of May 2020, Universal Pictures presented the first trailer. After the film was originally due to hit US cinemas on June 19, 2020 and German cinemas on July 30, 2020, the film has been available as video-on-demand since June 12, 2020 .

reception

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 12.

So far, the film has won over 72 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 6.8 out of a possible 10 points

Thomas Abeltshauser of epd Film writes that the film is the clearest product of Pete Davidson's exorcism of inner demons and family therapy with the means of comedy, the tone of which director Judd Apatow changes from initially quite brutal slacker humor to compassion: "An interesting one, albeit one not always a firm tightrope walk between sarcastic joke and maudlin making peace with the wounds of one's own origin. " You don't have to know Davidson's biography for that, says Abeltshauser.

Karsten Munt writes in the Berliner Zeitung that The King of Staten Island casts a glimpse of this time covered in marijuana haze and meanders along the fifth district of New York and the blue-collar America that is based here, where the sad present has long since arrived: “Maybe this forgotten and abandoned America needs exactly this vulnerable and lovable king. Even if he has not yet found his calling. "

Michael Meyns, film correspondent for the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater, writes without glorifying Staten Island that Judd Apatow shows her charm, her very special aura, which makes her something like an oasis of normality in the shadow of Manhattan's skyscrapers. And in the end Scott realized exactly that: "Even if he stands out from the crowd with his many tattoos, it is not so wrong to lead a completely normal life, including a bit of average life."

The German dubbing was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Nana Spier on behalf of Berliner Synchron GmbH Wenzel Lüdecke.
