Hermann Maass

Hermann Maaß (born October 23, 1897 in Bromberg ; † October 20, 1944 in Berlin-Plötzensee ) was a German trade unionist, publicist, social democratic politician and resistance fighter from July 20, 1944 .

Life

Hermann Maaß was born the son of a railway official in Bromberg ( Province of Posen ). After graduating from high school, he took part in the First World War, in which he was seriously wounded in 1918. Maaß then studied philosophy , psychology and sociology at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin ; he passed the teaching examination. In 1924 he became managing director of the Reich Committee of the German Youth Associations and editor-in-chief of the magazine Das Junge Deutschland . In 1933 he was released by the National Socialists . He was offered a professorship at Harvard University , which he declined. Until 1938 he was editor of the series Youth and Education Abroad and Youth and Education in the World .

In the following years he was an employee and business partner of Wilhelm Leuschner . He built union-related resistance groups and maintained contacts with the Kreisau district . Because of these contacts - he also met with Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg - he was arrested on August 8, 1944.

On October 20, 1944, together with Julius Leber and Adolf Reichwein, he was sentenced to death by the People's Court under its president Roland Freisler and hanged on the same day in Berlin-Plötzensee prison .

Honors

In 1980, in the immediate vicinity of the Plötzensee execution site in Berlin-Moabit, a bridge on Seestrasse over the connecting canal to the Westhafen was named after Hermann Maaß.
