occupation

Dinner in America is a film by Adam Rehmeier that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020.

action

The musician and punk rocker Simon not only takes drugs, he also deals with them. Because there is still not enough money, he donates his body to drug research. As a participant in a study, he should be compensated.

His drug deals are just one of many reasons the local police are looking for him. Simon barely escapes the cops, thanks in part to the intervention of Patty, a pet shop employee. The young woman seems awkward in many ways. She invites Simon to her home, unimpressed by his strange hairstyle. Simon hides in this Detroit suburb until he realizes Patty is a big fan of his alter ego, John Q. Public, the masked and anonymous singer from the punk quartet Psyops. Simon sets off on a trip through the American Midwest with Patty.

production

Directed by Adam Rehmeier , who also wrote the script.

The shooting took place in Detroit, Michigan and the surrounding area.

The film was first shown on January 24, 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival . It will be shown at the Fantasia Film Festival 2020 at the end of August and beginning of September 2020. The film is the centerpiece of the 34th Fantasy Film Festival taking place in September 2020 .

Reviews

The film was rated positively by all critics recorded by Rotten Tomatoes and received an average rating of 7.7 out of a possible 10 points.

Dennis Harvey of Variety writes that Kyle Gallner is stunning in the lead role and makes Simon appear so charismatically cool that one can overlook the fact that the script also gives him some homophobic traits in addition to its profane language. The film is not well constructed or particularly original, but thanks to the work of cameraman Jean-Philippe Bernier and John Swihart's electro-trash score, the viewer has something to be “happy”.
