Elizabeth Haysom

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elizabeth Roxanne Haysom (born April 15, 1964 in Salisbury , Rhodesia ) is a Canadian national who was sentenced to 90 years imprisonment in October 1987 for aiding and abetting murder of her parents Derek and Nancy Haysom in Bedford County, Virginia , and in 2019 was released on parole.

While fleeing the United States, Haysom and her boyfriend at the time, Jens Soering , were arrested in London in April 1986 for check fraud and shoplifting and were extradited to the United States. Haysom was sentenced to two 45-year sentences, which were served at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women in Troy, Virginia. She was paroled on November 25, 2019 and deported to Canada on January 26, 2020.

Murders

Elizabeth Haysom is the child of Derek William Reginald Haysom, a retired manager, and Nancy Astor Benedict Haysom, an artist. Derek and Nancy had a total of five children from previous marriages. Elizabeth attended boarding schools in Switzerland and England and was then enrolled at the University of Virginia . There she met the then 18-year-old German Jens Soering in August 1984.

On the morning of April 3, 1985, the bodies of Derek and Nancy Haysom were discovered at their Loose Chippings country house in Bedford County. They were stabbed and almost beheaded on March 30, 1985.

Condemnation

Haysom pleaded guilty to complicity in double homicide in 1987 and was sentenced to 90 years in prison - 45 years for each murder - after contradicting statements about the murder weapon and its alibi. Due to Haysom's incriminating testimony and his later revoked confession, Soering was sentenced to two life sentences for murder in 1990.

The German documentary The Promise from 2016 describes the criminal trials from Söring's point of view. The case was also thematized in 2013 in the 2nd season of the US documentary series Killer Couples: Murderous Couples .

Release on parole

Haysom's first application for parole was rejected in 1995, followed by another in 2006. On November 25, 2019, Virginia Democratic Governor Ralph Northam announced that both Haysom and Soering would be released, but not pardoned, and deported to their respective home countries.

According to critics, parole was granted for financial gain in the state of Virginia, not repentance. Her young age at the time of the crime is said to have influenced the decision of the Parole Board . Haysom has been released into the custody of the Immigration and Customs Service as she is a Canadian citizen.
