It is the third part in the Madagascar series after Madagascar and Madagascar 2 , but the first 3D film in the series. Directed by Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath and Conrad Vernon . The film was released in cinemas in the United States on June 8, 2012, in Switzerland on September 27, 2012, in Germany on October 2, 2012 and in Austria on October 4, 2012. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2012 .

action

Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippopotamus miss the penguins and chimpanzees that have left for Monte Carlo in Africa . Soon the four of them set off for Europe themselves. After the friends are reunited, they are followed by Captain Chantal DuBois' animal catcher service in Monaco . The animals manage to escape by buying a traveling circus from the casino winnings. This circus, run by the Siberian tiger Vitaly, is past its prime, but is being re-motivated by Alex and his friends. The journey of the traveling circus leads through several European cities and ends in London, where the circus is hired to perform in America. So the friends finally come back to New York.

But the return turns out to be far less glamorous than hoped: The zoo is now like a prison in which high fences and barbed wire are supposed to prevent the animals from disappearing again. In addition, DuBois is hailed as a heroine for allegedly bringing the friends back and wants to use the celebrations to get Alex's head as a trophy, which was actually her plan from the start. At the last moment, however, the circus animals appear and, under the pretext of a public performance, save the friends from the zoo. Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria decide to stay in the circus instead of the zoo and travel on with their new friends.

In the last sequence of the film, the viewer learns that the penguins overpowered DuBois and their assistants and shipped them to Madagascar in boxes, just like what happened to the friends in the first film.

production

The CEO of DreamWorks Animation Jeffrey Katzenberg , confirmed in 2008 that a sequel to Madagascar 2 was planned. On the Television Critics Association's press tour in January 2009, Katzenberg said Madagascar 3 was in production and will be in theaters in summer 2012.

premiere

Madagascar 3: Escape Through Europe premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2012. The film was also converted to IMAX format and shown in selected regions of Europe, including Russia, Ukraine and Poland.

The premiere screening in German took place on September 16, 2012 in the Circus Krone building in Munich.

reception

Almost four months after its US launch, the film opened in German cinemas so that the film did not have to compete with Ice Age 4 . Both film series got off to an extremely successful start in Germany. Production costs were US $ 145 million and global revenues were US $ 742 million to date. This makes it the most successful offshoot of the Madagascar series and replaces Kung Fu Panda 2 as the most successful non-Shrek film from Dreamworks Animation . In the first week, 1,434,965 German cinema-goers saw the film, which put it in first place. Overall, over 3.923 million viewers in Germany saw the film. The film series has earned 1.878 billion US dollars worldwide, of which 127.88 million US dollars in Germany alone.

Reviews

Michael Ranze in the film service : “Faster, higher, further: the directors have not only added a third dimension to the Madagascar franchise, everything has turned out louder, more colorful, more frenetic and faster. Turbulent chases and fantastic circus performances impress and also a little intimidating, given the brilliance and the blaze of colors of the pictures, the speed of the action, the rapid change of location, the spectacularly astonishing 3D. The humor and the charm of the first two parts have been reduced a bit, which is mainly due to the sparingly dosed pun. The figures only shout commands to each other or react in panic to the injustice that is waiting at the next corner. The character outlines that were concisely worked out in the previous films are blurring. In return, the production focuses primarily on the energy and artistry of the story. Even the chase in Monte Carlo with its destructiveness and DuBois' obsession is reminiscent of the madness of a Tex Avery . The performance in the London Circus, where the animals set off incredible artistic fireworks, as if they wanted to surpass the closing ceremony of the Olympics, cannot be surpassed. How here the figures measure almost weightlessly through the room, with dizzying jumps and breathtaking trapeze stunts that use 3D effectively, followed by an agile, tumbling camera, which only animated films allow - that is second to none. "

“In addition to the indestructible 'Shrek' universe, the 'Madagascar' franchise is one of the crown jewels in the DreamWorks Animation story fund, ........ At least the third part, the fastest and most breathless in the saga so far, does not show any signs of wear and tear detect."

“When filmmakers and producers explain why their new film was shot or converted in 3D, it usually produces nebulous, flimsy lines of argument that always have one thing in common: the obvious motivation, namely the prospect of a simplified increase in money, is categorically denied. However, given the visually modest results, it is sometimes the only plausible explanation. A certain skepticism has long since developed among the public and critics, especially when it comes to sequels or new editions that suddenly appear in 3D ....... Conclusion: Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath tie in with their animated comedy 'Madagascar 3' the predecessor and outbid it. The simple motto for this gaudy film candy is 'More, more, more' - and all in rapid 3D and as colorful as possible. "

“So the usual entertaining mass entertainment for the underage cinema audience with gags from the time machine and brutal slapstick from the assembly line. In 'Madasgacar 3' everything remains predictable: the animations are first class and the countless action sequences only serve the economic factor called the 3-D effect. "

- Arne Hübner : bummelkino.de

“'Madagascar 3' shows the calving fauna at the end of its possibilities. Everything that this type of film lives on is missing in Madagascar: visual invention, original overdrawing; We don't even want to talk about heart and feeling. ...... How can this film series be increased? 'Madagascar 3' shows the animal troops, but above all their makers, almost at the end of their wisdom. "
