Eduard Wilhelm Schulz (born October 5, 1796 in Hanover , † November 17, 1880 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) was a Protestant pastor and founder of the Evangelical Hospital in Mülheim an der Ruhr.

Live and act

After studying theology in Marburg, Göttingen and Berlin, Schulz worked as a pastor in Mülheim an der Ruhr from 1820, and from 1860 to 1866 in the office of superintendent . He was close to the revival movement , initiated monthly mission hours and cultivated an intense friendship with Theodor Fliedner . With the founding of hospitals in Kaiserswerth (1836) and Duisburg (1844), Fliedner was the model for Eduard Schulz when he formed a committee in 1849 to also found a hospital in Mülheim an der Ruhr. For this purpose Schulz acquired a plot of land on the Mülheim church hill . On March 19, 1850 the time had come: the Evangelical Hospital in Mülheim an der Ruhr was able to open with an initially modest 10 beds. Eduard Schulz was elected President of the Board of Trustees and held this office until 1879. He died in 1880 at the age of 84.

Honors

The so-called “pastor's memorial stone” still commemorates the merits of four Mülheim pastors, including Eduard Schulz. After the stone had first been placed in the Mülheim old town cemetery, it was transferred to the patient garden of the Evangelical Hospital in the 1980s on the initiative of Pastor Walter Hufschmidt.
