The church hill is a hill in Mülheim an der Ruhr to the right of the Ruhr , on which the core of the old town was. The old town was largely destroyed by aerial bombs in 1943 and 1944 during the Second World War. After the war ended, other dilapidated buildings were demolished.

In addition to the undestroyed remnants of the old half-timbered buildings, two churches have been preserved on the church hill from the pre-war period. Both have been well restored. The Evangelical Petrikirche, first mentioned in 1093, with its church music tradition, is a landmark of the city of Mülheim , along with the town hall tower . The Catholic parish church of St. Mary's Birth was built in 1928/1929 by the architect Emil Fahrenkamp .

The Petrikirchenhaus Foundation began in the 2010s with the construction of a building based on a historical model to restore the ensemble that had been destroyed in the war. The project was initially controversial due to architectural and urban planning considerations. After completion in 2017, however, the project was praised for its harmonious integration into the overall ensemble.
