Eric Darnell

Eric Darnell (* 1960 ) is an American director , screenwriter , animator , songwriter and voice actor .

Life

Darnell attended Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village and graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a BA in Journalism in 1983 . He then worked on experimental films for four years with grants from foundations. While watching the camera work while watching a baseball game on television, he had the idea to try computer animation. In 1989 he directed Michael Stipe's rock band REM on the animated music video Get Up and in 1991 joined the Character Animation Department of Pacific Data Images (PDI) and worked on several commercials and feature films. When PDI merged with DreamWorks in 1996, he helped direct The Prince of Egypt from 1997 without being mentioned in the credits , thus entering the animation business of DreamWorks .

Darnell's short film Gas Planet was awarded the jury prize for best computer animation at the 1992 Ottawa Animation Festival for its use of barely visible computer animation . In 2000, the collaboration with director Tim Johnson at Antz resulted in the 3D short film CyberWorld , which continues the adventures of Z-4195. In addition, he wrote the lyrics for the song Welcome to Duloc for the film Shrek - The daring hero and was also active as a voice actor in the Madagascar films.

Darnell lives in Campbell with his wife Laura and two children .
