action

Sonny is enjoying his prosperous life after a taxi ran over him a few years ago and the court awarded him a generous $ 200,000 pension. Most of the time he sits in his New York apartment with his best friend, pizza maker Nazo.

One day little Julian is standing in front of Sonny's door. The boy is an accident involving Sonny's partner, Kevin, who is currently in China. Sonny decides to take the boy in to show his sense of responsibility to his girlfriend Vanessa, who left him because of his lack of ambition.

Vanessa now has a new boyfriend again and is unimpressed by Sonny's "fatherhood". Julian meanwhile causes Sonny some problems because he doesn't want to bathe and goes to bed. But Sonny slowly develops real father feelings and learns how to deal with Julian. In addition, thanks to Julian, he gets to know the likeable Layla and falls in love with her.

When the authorities want to withdraw custody of Julian from Sonny, he fights passionately in court for his "son", but threatens to lose. Then suddenly Kevin, Sonny's friend and Julian's biological father, appears and applies for custody. Sonny agrees with this arrangement, as he can now continue to see Julian.

In the end, Sonny and Layla get married and have a daughter. Julian gets on really well with his father Kevin and his stepmother Corinne and is still close friends with Sonny.

criticism

“Big Daddy is too anarchic for a family film. Anyone who just wants to be entertained will be bothered by the strongly constructed story and the fact that the whole film is centered on Adam Sandler and his often moderately funny gags. "

- film mirror

"All in all, you can say that the film is worth seeing, but does not stand out from the crowd of mediocre comedies from Hollywood."

- Cinemascope

"Lame comedy that tries to squeeze an emotional reaction from the viewer with sentimental clichés and thereby exposes itself as a synthetic construct."

production

The film had a production budget of $ 34.2 million. The worldwide box office result was around 235 million US dollars.
