The Mar Elias University is a multi-religious university in Nazareth in Israel. It is the first Arab-Christian-Israeli university in the Holy Land.

history

The university, which began teaching in October 2003 as a branch of the University of Indianapolis (USA), was granted a comprehensive license as a university by the Council for Higher Education in Israel in 2009.

The university was initiated by the Melkite Archbishop of Galilee, Elias Chacour . He had already founded the "Bar Elias Educational Institutions", an educational center with secondary schools, in 1982, which - as of 2001/02 - was attended by almost 4,000 students. Like this university, these educational institutions are intended to serve peace and reconciliation between the population groups in Israel.

organization

The university began teaching with 71 students and is to be expanded to a number of 3,000 students. Christian, Muslim and Jewish students from Germany and abroad are enrolled at the university. The faculties are interdenominational. The joint study should make a contribution to integration, reconciliation and peace between the religions.

The university is part of the "Mar Elias Educational Institutions" (MEEI). The university campus was relocated from I'billin to Nazareth in 2009 .
