Elias Chacour ( Hebrew אליאס שקור; ) (Born November 29, 1939 in Bar'am , Galilee ) is an Israeli-Arab Melkite Greek-Catholic clergyman and retired Archbishop .

Life

Chacour was born in Bar'am. After the Israeli War of Independence, the residents of Bir'am were driven from their hometown. Most of them, including the Chacour family, settled in nearby Gisch . He graduated from school in Nazareth and studied theology at the Saint-Sulpice seminary in Issy-les-Moulineaux . In 1965 he returned to Israel. After his ordination on July 24, 1965, he began studying the Torah and Talmud at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , and he also turned to Aramaic and Syriac . He was the first Arab to graduate from the Hebrew University . After his studies he worked as a priest in I'billin and went on lecture tours abroad, including in Germany.

Chacour worked against the resistance of the Israeli authorities for the interests of the Arab Israelis , especially those of the youth. In doing so, he persistently cultivated connections to Christian and Jewish circles. In 2003 the first Arab-Christian-Israeli Mar Elias University was opened in I'billin on his initiative .

In February 2006 he was named Archbishop of Akko, Haifa, Nazareth and all of Galilee . He received his episcopal ordination from the Melkite Archbishop of Petra and Philadelphia , Georges El-Murr BC , on February 25, 2006; Co-consecrators were Chacour's predecessor Pierre Mouallem SMSP and the Archbishop of Homs , Isidore Battikha BA .

Chacour called emigration the greatest internal enemy of Christians in the region. Tens of thousands of Christians have been displaced, fled or left the region in search of a better life. According to his information, around 130,000 Christians still live in Galilee, and only 5,000 to 7,000 in Jerusalem . In addition, there would be around 30,000 in the West Bank .

Archbishop Chacour resigned on January 27, 2014. The Maronite Archbishop of Haifa and the Holy Land , Moussa El-Hage OAM , was entrusted with the administration of the Melkite diocese as Apostolic Administrator for the duration of the Sedis vacancy .
