Georges El-Murr BC (born October 11, 1930 in Ka'â near Baalbek , Lebanon ; † February 8, 2017 ) was a Lebanese religious and Melkite archbishop of Petra and Philadelphia in Jordan .

Life

The ordination to the Chaplain of the Basilian by St. He received John the Baptist on July 27, 1958. In 1968 he was appointed vicar for the Irbid district and in 1991 moved to Newton ( USA ). Political positions

The archbishop caused a stir in 2002 when he demanded diplomatic and economic sanctions against Israel from the USA and the European Union . He protested against the ongoing armed conflict in Palestine and called on Israel to withdraw.

"As long as the US utters only empty words and hollow threats, they stand in the conflict on the side of Israel," said El-Murr. In his view, neither the EU nor the US have done enough in the past to avoid the conflict.
