Georges El-Murr
Georges El-Murr BC (born October 11, 1930 in Ka'â near Baalbek , Lebanon ; † February 8, 2017 ) was a Lebanese religious and Melkite archbishop of Petra and Philadelphia in Jordan .
Life
The ordination to the Chaplain of the Basilian by St. He received John the Baptist on July 27, 1958. In 1968 he was appointed vicar for the Irbid district and in 1991 moved to Newton ( USA ). With the appointment as Archbishop of Petra and Philadelphia on August 26, 1992 he succeeded Archbishop Saba Youakim . On 23 October 1992 he donated the Melkite Patriarch Archbishop Maximos V Hakim in Amman, the episcopal ordination , as co-consecrators assisted the archbishops André Haddad BS of Zahle and Furzol (Lebanon) and Abraham take BC from Homs ( Syria ).
In his capacity as Archbishop he consecrated Elias Chacour as Archbishop of Akka ( Israel ) and was co- consecrator of Georges Nicolas Haddad SMSP Exarch of Argentina , Bishop Abdo Arbach Exarch of Argentina and his later successor Archbishop Yasser Ayyash . From 1997 to 2007 he was Patriarchal Exarch of the Melkite Church in Iraq . Pope Benedict XVI accepted his age-related resignation on June 18, 2007.
Political positions
The archbishop caused a stir in 2002 when he demanded diplomatic and economic sanctions against Israel from the USA and the European Union . He protested against the ongoing armed conflict in Palestine and called on Israel to withdraw.
"As long as the US utters only empty words and hollow threats, they stand in the conflict on the side of Israel," said El-Murr. In his view, neither the EU nor the US have done enough in the past to avoid the conflict. In the former Yugoslavia or in Iraq and Afghanistan the international community interfered, but Israel is being allowed to go. "
