Robert F. Simon (born December 2, 1908 in Mansfield , Ohio , † November 29, 1992 in Tarzana , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor.

life and career

A native of Ohio, Robert F. Simon began his acting career with the Cleveland Playhouse . His primary goal of acting was to overcome his shyness, but eventually developed into a professional career. He made his Broadway debut in 1942 in the drama Uncle Harry at the side of Eva Le Gallienne and Joseph Schildkraut . In the following years he worked regularly on Broadway as an actor and stage manager . Among other things, he was the assistant director of Elia Kazan and represented actor Lee J. Cobb in the title role of the play at the premiere of Death of a Salesman in 1949 . Simon was a member of the famous Actors Studio in New York .

Simon made his film debut in 1950 in a small role as a police inspector in the film noir Faustrecht der Großstadt , directed by Otto Preminger . The tall, balding character actor was mainly featured in Hollywood as the actor of authority figures such as police officers ( Der Zwang zum Bad ), sheriffs ( duel at dawn ), doctors ( A Fistful of Hope ), military officers ( Company Petticoat ) or fathers (as Benny's father Goodman in The Benny Goodman Story ). After having worked as a supporting actor in a large number of movies in the 1950s, he turned increasingly to television at the beginning of the new decade. He had recurring roles in several classic series, as kindly father-that of Elizabeth Montgomery embodied title character in five episodes Bewitched and in the role of General Mitchell in three episodes of M * A * S * H . In the television series The Amazing Spider-Man , the first real - life adaptation of the Spider-Man comics, he played the newspaper man J. Jonah Jameson between 1978 and 1979 .

In the course of his career, Simon appeared in around 150 television series and nearly 50 feature films. His last role was in an episode of Airwolf in 1985 . He died in 1992 three days before his 84th birthday and was buried in Oakwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles.
