action

The pirate Jean Laffite rules a small island in the Mississippi estuary off New Orleans. Towards the end of the British-American War , Great Britain sends ships to attack the port city. The American general Andrew Jackson wants to station his soldiers on Lafitte's island in order to be able to better defend the city. The inhabitants of the small island, however, sympathize with the British and want to ally with them. The situation is exacerbated as Lafitte is American at heart and has fallen in love with Annette, daughter of the governor of Louisiana, William Claiborne.

background

Cecil B. DeMille was to shoot a remake of his own film The Buccaneers of Louisiana with King of the Buccaneers . Since DeMille's health had deteriorated significantly, he handed over the direction of his then son-in-law Anthony Quinn , who had played the role of "Beluche" in 1938. The premiere of the film took place on December 1st, 1958, DeMille died only a few weeks later in January 1959. In the original version he speaks a short 2 minute introduction to the film, in which he explains the historical situation in front of a wall map.
