Andrew Victor McLaglen (born July 28, 1920 in London , † August 30, 2014 in Friday Harbor , Washington , United States ) was a British director .

Career

Andrew V. McLaglen was the son of Enid Lamont and actor Victor McLaglen , who was a busy actor for John Ford and received an Oscar for best actor in 1936 .

Andrew V. McLaglen came into contact with film as a teenager, as he was occasionally allowed to visit his father on film sets . After small roles in two film dramas in the 1940s, he began a film career behind the camera. As an assistant director he has worked with great directors such as Budd Boetticher , John Ford , John Farrow and William A. Wellman . His first own film came out in 1956, which was followed by four more B-films . Other jobs came from television, such as the western series Smoking Colts , A Thousand Miles of Dust, and The People of Shiloh Ranch .

Based on his previous experience with the western genre , he took over directing a large-scale production for the first time with MacLintock in 1963 . With a few exceptions, he remained loyal to western films until 1976, during which time he worked no less than five times with John Wayne and four times with James Stewart .

After McLaglen had mainly worked for television until the mid-1970s, he had a huge box office success with the tough mercenary film The Wild Geese Coming in 1978 , which also resulted in a wave of mercenary films . Three other, similar action and war films followed under McLaglen's direction in the following two years: Explosive Command Atlantic , Steiner - The Iron Cross II and The Sea Wolves are coming . Roger Moore could be seen in three of his films each in a leading role. However, there were no further film successes for the director. As in the 1970s, he returned to television in the 1980s.

Andrew V. McLaglen was married four times, including from 1946 to 1958 to actress Veda Ann Borg . His children, Mary and Josh McLaglen, are also in the film business. Mary works as a production manager, Josh was, among other things, first assistant director at James Cameron's Titanic .
