The Blues and the Grays is a star- studded American television series that takes place before and during the Civil War and tells the story from the perspective of war correspondent John Geyser (played by John Hammond ).

The short series was produced by Larry White and Lou Reda in association with Columbia Pictures Television and aired between November 14 and 17, 1982 in three parts with a total running time of 381 minutes on CBS ; later the rights were sold to The Coca-Cola Company . In Germany the first broadcast took place in 6 parts from February to April 1985 in the first ; it has not yet been repeated.

The series, based on an original by historian Bruce Catton and filmed in Arkansas , was released on DVD on November 6, 2001 (three-media set). A newly cut, shortened version with a running time of 296 minutes was released on July 26, 2005 - also on DVD (set with two media). In September 2017 the complete version was released on three DVDs with a running time of around 365 minutes.

The series portrays the families of two sisters: Maggie Geyser and Evelyn Hale.

The Geysers are farmers from Charlottesville , Virginia . While you have divided opinions on slavery , you stand behind the Confederation of the Southern States cause . An exception in the family is son John, an artistically inclined young man who sympathizes with the slaves in the south and works for the liberation of blacks.

The Hales own a small newspaper in Gettysburg , Pennsylvania . You stand behind the Union states and against slavery, but like many Northerners strive for a peaceful solution to the problems in the country.

The drama begins in 1859 when John Geyser - the protagonist of the series - travels to Pennsylvania to work as a reporter for his uncle Jacob Hale's newspaper, as he can no longer stand life in the country. His first assignment leads him to the trial of the abolitionist John Brown , in which he former Jayhawker and Pinkerton - Detective gets to know Jonas Steele and befriends him.

At Christmas 1860 there is a falling out with his family and John returns to Pennsylvania for good; John's three brothers Matthew, Mark, and Luke plan to serve in the Confederate Army . His three cousins ​​Jake, Malachi and James Hale, however, join the Union Army .
