Diane Carol Baker (born February 25, 1938 in Hollywood , California ) is an American actress and film producer .

Life

Diane Baker, who grew up in Hollywood, moved to New York at the age of 18 , where she studied ballet with Nina Fonaroff and acting with Charles Conrad. She later attended the Estelle Harman Workshop in Los Angeles . In 1958, the then 20-year-old actress received a seven -year contract with the 20th Century Fox studio , which marked the start of her film career.

Baker made her debut in 1959 in the three Oscars drama The Diary of Anne Frank in the role of Margot Frank , for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for best young actress the following year . Also in 1959 she was the friend of Pat Boone's character in the adventure film The Journey to the Center of the Earth, based on the book by Jules Verne . For her role in the thriller Der Preis (1963), in which she appeared alongside Paul Newman and Elke Sommer , she was again nominated for a Golden Globe in 1964. She received an Emmy Award nomination in 1966 for her role in the television drama Inherit the Wind (1965), a television adaptation of the play Who Sows the Wind . In her films from the 1960s, Baker often played friendly and beautiful young women who were courted by the main cast. She made a dramatic departure from this image in 1964 in William Castle's horror thriller The Straitjacket as the ax-murdering daughter of Joan Crawford . Her appearance as the sister-in-law of Sean Connery , who causes some conflicts, in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Marnie (1964) was also very spirited .

In the 1970s cinema, which was shaped by New Hollywood , there were only a few roles left for Baker, from then on she was mostly seen in television productions. She took on guest roles in series such as Columbo , Kojak - Einsatz in Manhattan , Mord ist Her Hobby and Die Nanny . In 1991, Baker played in Jonathan Demme's thriller The Silence of the Lambs, the US Senator Ruth Martin , whose daughter Catherine is kidnapped by a serial killer.
