criticism

“Gripping adventure film that turns the clichés of the genre into their opposite and develops the almost agonizingly slow progression of evil without any romanticization. In the confrontation of the main characters, the superbly photographed film is more reminiscent of the subtle novels of Herman Melville than of Jules Verne's fantastic stories. Drastic cuts have eliminated some atrocities, but also rob the film of much of its meaning and narrative rhythm. "
