Cecilio Paniagua

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cecilio Paniagua Rodriguez (born December 8, 1911 in Terque, today in Alpujarra Almeriense , Almería Province , Spain , † January 24, 1979 in Madrid ) was a Spanish cameraman .

Life

Cecilio Paniagua Rodriguez had studied architecture for a few semesters in the early 1930s before he became interested in photography. In 1935 he started working as a second cameraman and short film cameraman, for documentaries and productions with a play story. His teachers included Spain's most important graphic designer of the early Franco years, the Nazi refugee Heinrich Gärtner , who called himself Enrique Guerner in his Spanish exile.

At the beginning of 1944, Paniagua began working as head cameraman for full-length feature films. For the next three and a half decades, he worked with the leading directors in his country, including Ladislao Vajda , Florián Rey , Juan Antonio Bardem , Juan de Orduña and Rafael Gil . For large-scale US productions that were shot in Spain for cost reasons or required a Hispanic ambience, Cecilio Paniagua acted as a second unit cameraman in later years . These include the films " The Fall of the Roman Empire ", " Three Girls in Madrid " and " Patton - Rebel in Uniform ".

Cecilio Paniagua ended his career a few months before his death with a fact-based, critically poorly received historical political drama from the Franco era, “ Companys, procès a Cataluña ”. Paniagua, who had also worked for television (e.g. the series "El Picaro" ), was considered to be a hard-working, quite productive picture designer without too much artistic ambitions.
