The Treasure Island (original title: Treasure Island , La Isla del Tesoro ) is a German-Italian-Spanish-French-British adventure film from 1972 based on the novel of the same name by Robert Louis Stevenson with Orson Welles in a leading role. Production companies were CCC-Film , Equiluz, Seven Film, FDL and Massfilms. Set in the 18th century on the English coast around Bristol and in the South Seas, the film is about a treasure expedition that is endangered by betrayal by the ship's crew. It was shot in Spain and was released in the Federal Republic of Germany on December 26, 1972.
action
An eccentric sailor named Billy Bones takes up residence in a remote inn on the English coast near Bristol, who attracts other mysterious sailors, the "Black Dog" and the blind Pew, formerly Bones' crony under the pirate captain Flint. They are after the map of a treasure on a South Sea island, which falls into the hands of the landlady's underage son, Jim Hawkins, after the deaths of Bones and Pew.
The local dignitaries, country doctor Dr. Livesey and the squire Trelawney decide to go on an expedition to find the treasure. Jim is supposed to be there as a cabin boy. In Bristol, Jim meets the seedy and one-legged Long John Silver, who is also going on the trip as Smutje and who has hired most of the crew, including himself Flint's pirates, of whom no one else has a clue, and who are also involved stole the treasure after Trelawney inadvertently revealed the secret. To the chagrin of Trelawney, Captain Smollett is skeptical about the voyage and the crew, but nevertheless sets sail. On the high seas, Jim overhears how the apparently good-natured Silver is planning the betrayal with his cronies and warns his people.
Once on the island, Flint's former hiding place, the two parties split up and Jim's group is able to occupy an abandoned fort. Silver's attempt at negotiation fails and a fight for fort begins, with the pirates initially losing out. While exploring the island on his own, Jim had suddenly met an abandoned sailor Flints, Ben Gunn, with whom he had allied himself against the pirates. Returning from another excursion to the fort, he finds it occupied by the enemy, he is taken hostage and then taken on a treasure hunt. On the way to the hiding place of the treasure, the gang comes across a skeleton, also one of Flint's people, killed by him and draped as a signpost. All those involved meet again at the treasure. Silver, who previously protected Jim from his people, is arrested and the return journey begins.
background
When Orson Welles was unable to persuade various producers to implement the Shakespeare work Falstaff , he also offered to work on the supposedly more popular and lucrative topic “Treasure Island”, after which he had written a script as a director and actor Silvers offered. Both films should be produced at the same time at the same location with the same actors at little additional cost. The Spanish producer Emiliano Piedra responded and they started with The Treasure Island in color and with Falstaff in black and white. According to Welles, however, Piedra supported Treasure Island too much , from which he therefore withdrew funds for his actually favorite work, whereupon this original project Treasure Island was soon abandoned. Years later, however, Welles pursued the project with director John Hough , but criticized changes in his script, which is why he only wanted to be called under the pseudonym OW Jeeves.
Reviews
“Close to the original. Played splendidly. "
"Technically experienced, but superficially and unimaginatively staged."
