action
Algeria around 1961: Capitaine Leblanc commands a group of paratroopers of the French Foreign Legion , whose members come from different nations. Leblanc has been commissioned to arrest the guerrilla leader Ben Bled of the Algerian resistance organization FLN , which is fighting for the independence of the French colony . During the search, they are joined by the prostitute Nora and an Arab boy .
The group succeeds in arresting Ben Bled, but then the helicopter with which they are to be flown out of the area of operation is shot down. The legionaries are therefore forced to make their way through hostile terrain to their fort . In a church they are besieged by the rebels, where the group is gradually decimated; the mirror according to the principle of the ten little negroes . Only Leblanc, Ben Bled and the Arab boy survived breaking out of the building. When they reach the safe area, they learn that peace negotiations have now started between the French government and the FLN. Leblanc is shocked and realizes that the legionnaires' efforts and their sacrifices were in vain.
Production notes
The shooting took place in the Almería / Andalusia area , the studio recordings apparently in Madrid . Director Wisbar was already known internationally through the war films Dogs, Do you want to live forever and sharks and small fish .
The theme song Concerto Disperado was a commercial success in both Italy ( Nini Rosso ) and the United Kingdom ( Ken Thorne ).
The Oldenburger Nordwest-Zeitung reported on the shooting on August 11, 1962, that the production was the first film about the Algerian war. In fact, as early as 1960, German television radio produced the multi-part Escape from Hell and in 1957 Wolfgang Staudte produced the war film Madeleine and the Legionnaire .
In an advertisement from the Oldenburg cinema “Capitol” (Heiligengeistraße 7) on May 10, 1963, the production was announced as a “breathtakingly tough film”: “march or crep… you simply have no other choice!”.
Other performance titles include Héros sans retour ( France ), A Patrulha do Inferno ( Brazil ), Os Hérois Don't Morrem ( Portugal ), Commando ( USA ) and The Legion's Last Stand ( Ireland ). It was produced by Midega Films, Monachia Zeynfilm and Tempo Film.
criticism
"The realistically staged military tragedy tries to illustrate the relativity of a soldier's duty, but it slips into sensational colportage."
