Ken Thorne (* 26 January 1924 in East Dereham , Norfolk , England ; † 9. July 2014 in California ) was a British composer of film music.

life and career

Ken Thorne, born in 1924 in East Dereham, Norfolk, England, began playing the piano when he was five. Since the early 1960s he has composed numerous film scores for successful feature films. Since the 1980s he was primarily active in the television industry.

His most famous film works were made in collaboration with director Richard Lester . This includes the musical direction in the Beatles film Hi-Hi-Hilfe! (1965), the following year the Oscar- winning film music for the film musical Toll drove the old Romans (1966) and the film music for the grotesque anti-war film How I Won the War (1969), in which John Lennon played a leading role. For the Monkees ' only feature film , Head , he composed a classic violin piece entitled Strings . Other well-known film works were 18 hours to eternity (1974) and the film music arrangement for Superman II - Alone Against All and Superman III - The Steel Lightning (1981 and 1983). Well-known television works include Diana - Your True Story (1993) and Liz - The Elizabeth Taylor Story (1995). In 1999 he composed the music for the Bible adaptation Maria - The Holy Mother of God .

Thorne, who is also listed under the names Kenneth Thorne or Ken Thorn, was married to Linda Hayes since 1973 and has three children.
