action

Towards the end of the Second World War , the fearful soldier Boysie Oakes accidentally saves the British secret service - Major Mostyn from an assassination attempt in Paris .

Twenty years later, Mostyn is looking for a hit man for his agency and remembers Oakes, whom he erroneously considers to be completely fearless. He puts him into service and after completing his training he can afford a pleasant lifestyle from his earnings.

Only when he receives his first murder assignment does Oakes realize what he has actually gotten himself into. In his need, he hires a freelance killer to take care of the murders for him. Everything is going according to plan at first until Oakes goes to the Côte d'Azur with Iris, Mostyn's secretary . There they are captured by Soviet agents who plan to assassinate the Duke of Edinburgh .

They are freed from the local contact person Quadrant and the boysie, who is afraid of flying , is tasked with preventing the attack on Prince Philip. To do this, he has to get into a top secret fighter plane , which is to be shown to the prince. In the end, he has to land the jet on his own.

criticism

"An only partially successful parody of agent films in a mixture of grotesque and realistic scenes."

“Spy riot loosened up and made bearable by parodic features and British humor. Technically speaking, the film leaves little to be desired. Well possible for adult lovers. "

  • The New York Times said, “The script could have worked - with the Beatles, for example, it stages the unheroic leading actor in embarrassing situations. The only reason to look at this expensive color production is the grandiose scenery. Jack Cardiff is a well-reputed leader of a camera. But leading actors is something completely different. "
  • Matt Blake writes: “In no moment does one of the precarious situations Oaks find himself in believable, and neither does it affect us. Jack Cardiff's airy direction matches Lalo Schifrin's inconsequential music and thus guarantees an unnoticeable film experience. "

background

The film based on the novel The liquidator of John Edmund Gardner , the first part of a series to Boysie Oakes , as James Bond - parody was created. It was initially planned to develop a series of films, but this did not materialize. Gardner later succeeded Ian Fleming as the official James Bond writer .
