John Edmund Gardner

John Edmund Gardner (born November 20, 1926 in North East England , † August 3, 2007 in Basingstoke , Great Britain ) was a British writer and in particular the author of thrillers.

Life

During the Second World War he served in the Air Force as early as 1943, at the age of 17, and was drafted into the Royal Navy for a few months in 1944. He later became a priest and worked as a vicar in Eversham. After seven years, he served as a chaplain in the Royal Air Force. In 1959 he wrote his first book. From 1959 to 1964 he was active as a journalist as a theater critic.

Gardner was married twice. The first marriage, which lasted from 1952 to 1997, had three children; In 2004 Gardner married an old childhood friend.

Gardner became internationally known when he succeeded Ian Fleming as the official James Bond author . In October 1980, his Bond authorship was announced to the public. In May of the following year, he published Countdown for Eternity, his first novel in the series. In total, he wrote fourteen James Bond novels between 1981 and 1996, not all of which were translated into German. He wrote the novel versions for the scripts for the films GoldenEye and License to Kill .
