The fastest way to the afterlife (original title: A Lovely Way to Die ) is a crime comedy from 1968 with Kirk Douglas and Sylva Koscina in the leading roles. Directed by David Lowell Rich .
action
New York cop Jim Schuyler is a daredevil and a womanizer. After a fight, he ends his service. He quickly gets a new job through the lawyer Fredericks: he is supposed to give personal protection to the young widow Rena Westabrook and investigate her case at the same time. She is charged with murdering her wealthy husband together with her lover Fleming. Since there is much evidence against her, she faces a long prison term.
Jim, too, is initially convinced of her guilt and only investigates half-heartedly. But he increasingly likes the attractive Rena and the two are slowly getting closer. But then more deaths occur and a murder attempt is carried out on Jim himself. In the end Jim succeeds in solving the murders. They were perpetrated by a gang that had taken up residence in a neighboring villa and committed the murders to cover up a large-scale fraud. In a turbulent finale, he can save Rena at the last second.
Reviews
“In front of locations in and around New York City, 'The Fastest Path to the Hereafter' inspires as a crime comedy with a lot of humor and lively '60s charm. Kirk Douglas is convincing once more as a heartbreaker and tough lawman. "
“A woman is charged with the murder of her rich husband, but a former police officer solves the entangled case and ensures a happy ending. Film fluctuating between social drama and crime thriller, which also remains undecided stylistically. "
