John P. Ryan (born July 30, 1936 in New York City , New York , † March 20, 2007 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Ryan, son of Irish immigrants , studied at the City College of The City University of New York , or CCNY for short, and served six years in the US Army. He made his first appearances in the early 1970s. As a supporting actor he appeared in series like Kojak , Starsky and Hutch , The Rockford Files , Miami Vice and * A * S * H M on.

At the side of Jack Nicholson he played his first supporting roles in the cinema. He had minor appearances in well-known films such as Futureworld - The Land of Tomorrow , 1976 with Yul Brynner and Peter Fonda , The Cotton Club , 1984 with Richard Gere and Hoffa , 1992 with Danny DeVito and Jack Nicholson . As a character actor, he played mostly straightforward cops and taciturn military personnel. In 1974 he took on a leading role in the horror film The Cradle of Evil .
