Power and its price (original title: Cadaveri eccellenti ) is an Italian - French thriller from 1976. Directed by Francesco Rosi , who, together with Tonino Guerra and Lino Iannuzzi, wrote the screenplay based on the novel Dead Judges Don't Talk ( Il Contesto ) by Leonardo Sciascia wrote in 1971.

action

A public prosecutor is murdered in an Italian city. Inspector Amerigo Rogas is tasked with the case. There are more murders of other senior judicial officials in other cities. Rogas notes that these senior judicial officers sentenced a pharmacist to 5 years in prison for attempted poisoning of his wife. He suspects that the two assessors of the court at the time are also on the murderer's list. During his further investigations he comes to the conclusion that the pharmacist committed the first murders, but that afterwards an initially unknown group of unpleasant judges murdered under this guise. Since Rogas is on the trail of a planned coup, he arranges a secret meeting with the First Secretary of the Communist Party. He wants to inform him about the planned coup. Since Rogas had noticed that he was constantly being followed by professionals, he always had his pistol with him. Rogas and the First Secretary of the Communist Party are killed at the meeting. The television reports on these two dead. At the request of the interior minister, it is alleged that Rogas first shot the secretary with his pistol and then committed suicide.

The Austrian newspaper Kurier wrote that the film began as a thriller and then condensed "more and more into an oppressive description of a political situation without losing a moment of tension" . It is "one of the best Sciascia films, not least thanks to Lino Ventura in the role of the simple police inspector who, despite growing fear, does not let himself be stopped from following the traces of a conspiracy" .

The magazine prisma wrote that the film was a "gripping, subtle political thriller" . The “differentiated performance” of Lino Ventura is “of the finest” .
