The Cruel (Original title: I Crudeli ) is a 1967 by Sergio Corbucci staged spaghetti western , a "something [he] more inspired by American role models" movie with Joseph Cotten in the lead role of fanatical head of the family. The German-language premiere was on February 14, 1968. A re-performance title was Die cruusamen Vier .
action
The American Civil War is over, but the fanatical southern officer Jonas Morrisson wants to raise a new army in New Mexico with the help of a bulging, stolen war chest. To get through the territories occupied by Northerners, Morrisson and his sons transport the money in a coffin and a dedicated "widow" who accompanies their allegedly fallen husband. But she likes to drink too much and tries to steal the money. She is killed in the process; the Morrissons replace her with a dancer.
Numerous other dangers await the journey; Among other things, she saves the actually hostile cavalry from an attack by Mexican bandits. Claire, the dancer, has her alleged husband buried in the fort; the Morrisson sons dig it up again and the group flees on. After encounters with bandits and Indians, Jonas is seriously injured; his sons shoot each other. Already dying, but finally in New Mexico, Morrisson discovers that the wrong coffin has been dug up again.
criticism
"A film that again provides an eloquent example that the Mediterranean Western with the mechanisms of the genre simply wants to convey tension - and thus cinema - and not ideology like the American model," wrote Klaus U. Reinke in Filmecho / Filmwoche , Issue 20, 1968. The lexicon of international films , on the other hand, judged ambiguously: “Exciting, formally interesting, but brutal European western that questions combative patriotism with dubious means.” The Protestant film observer came to a similar assessment: “Adventurous scenarios In a powerful, gripping production, this European grand west could secure a broad interest, if not brutal derailments significantly reduced the appeal and value of the film. For adults only! ”“ The title of the film says it all, ”says Il Resto del Carlino, in which the acting ensemble is praised.
Remarks
The exterior shots were made in Spain. Almería , Seseña , Colmenar Viejo and Manzanares el Real were among the locations.
The film grossed just over Lire 300 million after its theatrical release in Italy on February 2, 1967 .
