José Nieto

José Nieto (born May 3, 1902 in Murcia , Spain , † August 10, 1982 in Matalascañas , Spain) was a Spanish actor.

Life

Nieto spent his childhood in Madrid and Valencia. As Josele he worked as a bullfighter and horse dealer until he switched to acting in 1925. It had caught the attention of director Florián Rey , who cast him in El Lazarillo de Tormes ; soon after, Nieto was starring in films regularly.

In the early 1930s he went to Hollywood to play Spanish versions of American productions; the Paramount Pictures sent him to Paris in 1933 to perform the same job there. In 1936 he became manager of the Teatro Cómico in Barcelona .

After the Spanish Civil War , he also played some roles in propaganda films and rose to become one of the greatest Spanish stars by the late 1940s. He was increasingly cast in international productions under well-known directors such as Stanley Kramer , Nicholas Ray , Orson Welles and David Lean . Nieto remained active until his death.
